Dan was born and raised in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Dan graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree; emphasis in Wildlife Biology. It turns out 2001 was a momentous year for Dan. In addition to his graduation, that was also the year that he helped to see the Fighting Sioux Football team take the NCAA Division II Championship as a starter and return specialist. He also married his wife Beth that year and worked on the Yellowstone Wolf Project at Yellowstone National Park documenting wolf behavior.
As a biologist Dan has done a large variety of work. For example he has worked for wildlife refuges, facilitated numerous surveys, mapped vegetation, and even interned at a fish hatchery. Dan worked for the US Dept. of Agriculture assisting with crop damage appraisal and the west nile virus hotline. He also helped the University of Wisconsin trap and track deer in order to research the chronic wasting disease epidemic.
Dan's experience with wildlife translates to his ownership of Trout Haven Homes, a development which is designed to protect its prized trout stream. He worked closely with the Department of Natural Resources to avoid erosion or run off that might negatively impact the stream.
Beth and Dan have two boys and a dog named Dakota. They have lived at Trout Haven since July of 2003.
